Best Beaches Near White Porch Inn

White Porch Inn is located near some of Cape Cod's best beaches. We're just minutes from Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach. And, we're a short drive to Head of the Meadow, one of our area's best kept secrets.

Race Point Beach

  • Location: Race Point Beach, Provincetown, MA
  • Distance from us: 2.8 miles

Race Point Beach is considered one of the best beaches in the New England area. The beach faces the Atlantic Ocean at the northernmost point of Cape Cod National Seashore and has miles of clean, sparkling sand. Because of it's exposed location, you'll get fantastic views of the Atlantic. And, in the spring, there's the distinct possibility that you'll see humpback whales migrating to colder waters. When you visit Race Point Beach, you have the option of hiking to Race Point Lighthouse. The hike is approximately two miles through sand and grassy fields, and takes about 45 minutes.

Race Point Beach is not surrounded by large sand dunes or cliffs, so it is wheelchair accessible. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months on part of the beach. Facilities include showers, changing rooms, and restrooms. Parking is available, but the parking lot can only hold around 300 cars. There is an entrance fee during summer months (typically, around $25/vehicle). Pets are not allowed on protected sections of the beach.

Herring Cove Beach

  • Location: Province Lands Rd, Provincetown, MA
  • Distance from us: 2.3 miles

Herring Cove Beach is the most popular beach near Provincetown and tends to draw relatively large crowds. Located on Cape Cod Bay, rather than the Atlantic Ocean, Herring Cove Beach tends to have smaller waves than other popular beaches in the Provincetown area. This makes it a great place for families with young children. Note that Herring Cove Beach is covered with small pebbles and rocks. This means you won't be treking a lot of sand back to your car, but it also means your feet will take a beating. You'll probably want to bring a pair of water shoes when visiting this beach.

Facilities include outdoor showers, a bathhouse, and restrooms. The beach also has a snack bar and picnic area. Parking is available, with two parking lots to choose from: the north lot, and the south lot. The north lot holds over 200 cars; the south lot holds around 400 cars. Herring Cove Beach is accessible by wheelchair near the south parking lot. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months along designated sections of the beach. There is an entrance fee during summer months (around $25/vehicle). Pets are not allowed on protected sections of the beach.

Head of the Meadow

  • Location: Cape Cod National Seashore, near Truro, MA
  • Distance from us: 7.5 miles

If you're looking for a great beach without the usual crowds, Head of the Meadow is for you. Managed by the National Park Service, Head of the Meadow is one of the least visited beaches in Cape Cod National Seashore, but it is definitely worth visiting.

Much of the beach is covered in soft sand, rather than the typical rock-fest you find at some Provincetown-area beaches. Head of the Meadow is also characterized by regular waves and occasional seal sightings. On certain sections of the beach, surfing, sea kayaking, and paddle boarding are allowed. Head of the Meadow is also a great place for birdwatching since it is an excellent habitat for shorebirds.

Facilities include outdoor showers, a changing room, and restrooms. Head of the Meadow is wheelchair accessible, and transportation is provided during part of the day for wheelchair users. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months along part of the beach. Parking is typically no problem at Head of the Meadow. The beach has two parking lots. Both can hold around 250 vehicles. Pets are not allowed on protected sections of the beach.

Going early in the morning, and early before tourist season, is a treat to have the beach to yourself! This morning was foggy but the sun shone Thru so it was picture perfect. Great waves cresting with spray in the breeze and then petering out on the sand. Tranquility personified.

We went this past week to watch the sunset and it was perfect!! The sun literally sets right in front of you. The beach had many other people who had the same idea and it was a fun crowd..We brought a blanket and some wine and loved the experience. Its a must do!!
