Things to Do in the Winter | Cape Cod

Boat Tours of Cape Cod

While the wintertime is technically Cape Cod's "off season", that doesn't mean you can't have a fulfilling vacation if you drop by. There are a ton of things to do in Provincetown and throughout Cape Cod as the snow falls--some activities might be preferable in the winter and impossible in the summer.

In this article, we will review some of the favorite stops that our guests might be interested in. Don't write off a winter in Provincetown this year.

Falmouth Ice Arena

Address: 9 Technology Park Dr, East Falmouth

Hours: Available Ice Arena Schedule can be found on this website.
Distance from White Porch Inn: 1 ½ hour drive

If there is one winter activity that sparks romance and a love for art, it's figure skating. It's depicted in hundreds of rom-coms, and many people want to try it as a result. At the Falmouth Ice Arena, you can live this magical movie experience.

If you're an ice rookie, you may want someone to guide you through the process. However, if you are an independent learner or a seasoned veteran, you can shape your path as you carve through the ice.

How much does the Falmouth Ice Arena cost?
The cost of your trip to Falmouth Ice Arena will depend on how long you are willing to stay at the rinks. Here are some general ticket prices:

General Ticket: $13 per 45 minutes

You can and should register online, as reservations tend to fill up fast through the winter.

Monomoy Island Excursions

How much is a Monomoy Island Excursion?

  • Adult: $42 per adult
  • Child (4-12 years old): $40 per child
  • Infant (0-3 years old): $10 per infant

Want to start your Massachusetts vacation right? Start off your trip with a cruise to see seals! You'll get the chance to hop in a boat and ride down to Monomoy Island. This sliver of land was dedicated to the preservation of local wildlife and migratory birds. It's the perfect getaway to get away from the hustle and bustle of Massachusetts.

What animals can you see on a Monomoy Island Excursion?

Obviously, you also get to see the seals. These blubbery "water doggos" are graceful creatures in the water, but you are most likely to see them congregating on the shores. It's truly a sight to behold. You'll also get a chance to see other creatures in the water, like some of the aforementioned migratory birds and maybe a shark if you're lucky! Bring a camera, you won't want to miss capturing these unforgettable moments.

If you have any questions about materials to bring, check out the seal cruise's website.

Ice Fishing

You've likely had opportunities to go fishing in your life, or at the very least have seen somebody fishing in the summer. However, ice fishing is a far more unique experience you can only find when the snow has come down heavy and the ice is thickest. Avoid fishing when the ice is less than 4 feet thick.

Cliff Pond

Distance from White Porch Inn: 46 minutes

Peter's Pond

Distance from White Porch Inn: 1 hour 15 minutes

What should I bring when ice fishing in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts Fishing License
Camping Chairs
Fishing Gear (You can rent some at local tackle shops)
Warm Clothes
Snacks and Water

Provincetown Theater

The last two activities would take you pretty far out of Provincetown, so now we will return somewhere much closer to the White Porch Inn.

Provincetown is a center for artistic expression. This is shown through the myriad of art galleries you'll see throughout town. However, the local theater can be a great place to catch a play--and it's open throughout the year!

How much does a ticket cost?

$20 per person, but it can change depending on the show. Click here to see the event calendar.

What are they performing?

While future broadcasts remain uncertain, in the past the actors have performed It's a Wonderful Life, Neptune, The Cake, and other small plays.

Cape Cod Coffee Shops

Provincetown is home to some of the loveliest coffee shops in America. The winter months can be blisteringly cold, but a stop at the local cafe can bring a bit of warmth to your heart and hands. Here are our favorites:

The Coffee Pot

Hours: 6:30AM - 9PM
Address: 315 Commercial Street

Kohi Coffee

Hours: 7AM - 5PM
Address: 199 Commercial Street

Joe's Coffee

Hours: 8AM - 3PM
Address: 170 Commercial Street

The Nut House

Hours: Contact for Details
Address: 237 Commercial Street

Cape Cod Fishing Charters

As mentioned before, deep sea fishing is one of the most popular activities in Cape Cod. As such, there are plenty of fishing charters you can rent or board so you can have a fantastic fishing experience.

How much is a fishing charter in Cape Cod?

The price of the boat will depend on the kind of fish you are looking for, the amount of time you want to spend on the water, and the time of year. For example, $600 will allow you to rent a charter for three hours if you are searching for striped bass.

Knowing what you owe the charter can get confusing, so look at their website for rates as you plan your Cape Cod vacation! Additionally, make sure you have your fishing license so you can keep some of your treasures.

This isn't all that Provincetown and Cape Cod can offer you this winter season. We also have event weeks for the notable holidays at the end of year--particularly Christmas and Thanksgiving. Check out that article down below!
